Kubuntu 7.04 - USB problem

I have recently installed 7.04 on a swiped HDD. I previously had 6.04 on 
the HDD and
was able to have my USB stick and external HDD shown on the desktop.
With 7.04 I get no sign of the USB stick or HDD. Perversely my camera 
with a USB
connection is recognized.
How do I get the USB devices to be shown on the desktop and activated?
I am quite new to Linux ;-)
