Derek replied -

DHCP. /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf should contain
 send host-name "<hostname>";
or may even have <hostname> replaced with your real host name.

If you can do an "nslookup" for the linux host name from the windows boxes,
you have no problem, if you can't, I'd bet it's not sending its hostname to
the DHCP server, and if it isn't then netbios doesn't know its name,
either.
-- Derek Comment back from Ian.... Thank you Derek!! You are no doubt
correct (or at least MUCH more knowledgeable than me) but your reply is
completely meaningless to me being still a "newbe"!! Maybe we should
indicate in the posts what level of understanding we have so as to
receive help at a level we can understand. I have solved my problem by a
"back-door" method by moving all the files I need onto an external drive
and moving this drive to one of the Windows machines that Linux can
"see". This does not solve the problem but does let me carry on in the
meantime. (BTW - disabling the Virus and Firewall software on the
Windows machine made no difference!) So - New Question - What book (or
other source) would you suggest that I can get to carry on my
understanding of the underlaying structure of Linux so that the kind of
reply you gave me can be understood!!??? Last of all I have a Treo 650
which works fine on the Windows machines but will not link to the Linux
box. Tried two different (working) USB ports but no luck. ('lsusb' does
not show any USB devices). Has anybody got this to work?? Thanks in
advanced to all for hand-holding a "New Guy"!! Ian
