Can't connect with wifi or modem

28%, ime, means it didn't find a DHCP server.  Try "sudo dhclient eth1" (or
whatever your interface is actually called).

sm = "smart modem".  ie, it requires windows drivers to actually function as
a modem.  It's possible there's a linux driver for it, but don't count on
it.
