apt-get update and upgrade problem

Well, it turned out that the broken file was the packages
cache. The version field was missing for a package.

I really can't believe this happened, as I cant understand
how it happened.

The sad fact is another package is broken now due to
an error like that. Even considering that packages break
how comes the system allows borked metadata into
it's cache. And what about failover? I want to install
other packages unrelated with the broken one and
can't.

I have used GNU/Linux distros for several years now
and came to k/ubuntu because I was tired of tinkering
with the system. I need to work on other things to make
a living. Yesterday night I could not finish an asignement
because I could not change ftp servers.

So be it, surely I will have an interesting weekend.

Sorry for the morose mood but wrong is wrong.
