Just because a lot of Linux adopters don't like windows and like to make 
comparisons doesn't mean that any given distro is competing with Windows.  If 
at all, Linux Distros compete with each other.  

Ford doesn't compete with Mercury -- they are the same company, but loyal 
buyers may make zealous comparisons.

That's a comparison, not a competition.

Kind of reminds of the teen music magazines of my youth "Beatles vs. Rolling 
Stones vs. Dave Clark Five".  Just because the magazines created some kind of 
pseudo-competition doesn't mean the bands themselves did.
