The prime mover to the upgrade cycle it that of Linux itself. Linux, as you
maybe aware, is only the kernel which access the computer's central
processer. That's it. All the other stuff, teh pretty desktops, the web
browsers, the graphics kits, are all built on top of that.
Within the world of kernel developers, there are two strains. One is called
stable and the other, for lack of a more imaginative word, unstable. Unstable
is where all the new features and prcesses are developed, such as built in
support for wireless cards, etc. Once these are tested and proven they move
into stable.
The Linux kernel upon which Kubuntu Dapper Drake is built has twelve months
less development than the kernel upon with Feisty is being built and six
months less than Edgy. In order to set up your desktop environment upon the
particular kernel which you are running there may or may not be additional
support for the libraries that are required.
If you absolutely must have the latest release number, then you may need to
update your kernel. In order to update your kernel, you can do it the
difficult way, ie yourself (ala Gentoo) or you can update the distribution
release number you are running.
That is one opinion of how it works and it is only offered in hopes that you
will understand that this is a community of comuter users who are constantly
making improvements on how the code which they are running works. There are
occaisions where there are reversions, but generally speaking it is all
improving. From the bottom up.
