When the DE environment is a single desktop
and not multiple desktops, then changing the DE alters it fundamentally.
I generally run Kubuntu with a fair spattering of Gnome programs, but
have only KDE as my desktop. This seems reasonable to me. They are
from the same Ubuntu "family" and for the most part use the same
repositories. Changing the DE environment changes the way these
various applications, dependencies, and their libraries relate to the
whole distribution.
You then can have the installation of, say, KDE 3.5.6 from 3.5.5
altering libraries, etc. I have upgraded and note that KDE 3.5.6 is
faster but I am getting more applications "freezing". There could be
many reasons for this, but it started with the installation of KDE
3.5.6 so perhaps its not mature enough yet. The Kubuntu web page says
its not well supported.
I'm reverting to KDE 3.5.5 where I didn't have this problem...
