The KDE 3.x font thumbnail code does not cache the previews, as they can 
change depending upon icon size. However, you can override that by editing:

/usr/share/services/fontthumbnail.desktop

And changing: CacheThumbnail=false
to: CacheThumbnail=true

For KDE4, the  font thumbnails will be cached.
