Dapper LTS boot failure

I'm using Dapper (6.06 LTS) on a Toshiba Satellite L25-S119 laptop. 
 I've encountered a failure to boot up.  The failure occurs at "mounting 
root filesystems."  The system diverts to the built-in shell "ash" after 
the messages listed below are displayed:

Is there any way to recover from this failure without reinstalling Kubuntu?
