Why is updating so slow?

I'd start noting when it's fast and when it's going slower. I'll bet
that it's going slower when there are more people accessing the web
more often.
Consider trying to get QoS enforced at your workplace. QoS (Quality
of Service) will put a limit on individual computers. You'll get a
slower connection, but it will be more consistent.
