The only how-to that worked for me.  To distill what you need to do if
you do not use an nvidia card, simply get your card working (be it
Intel, ATI, SiS...) and then continue in that how-to right where the
nvidia-specific instructions left off.

It worked for me (I had better luck with the Xgl rendering option,
thought YMMV obviously).

Some of you are probably rolling your eyes saying "you just found this
out?"  Yes, I did just find this out.  It took me the longest of
times, and I'm willing to bet that someone out there has been
wondering about this too and might possibly appreciate my findings.
