KDE Menu Edit problem

Thanks, but it doesn't seem to work as I would expect. 
~/.kde/share/applnk/ seems to expect .desktop files only.

Instead, I tried to copy the links into the command entry in KDE Menu, 
but these then only work when the appropriate app is added. IOW, file 
associations are not applied.

I'm surprised that there there doesn't appear to be a simply way to do 
this. Alternatively, is there a replacement for KDE Menu? Preferably, 
one that supports drag and drop.
