Now that was a link I hadn't seen yet....very nice. :-)

Might just be the solution I've been looking for i.e. my savvy windows acquaintances have already got cygwin running ....it's the non-savvy ones that I want to grant "easy" access.

Hope it's as easy as it looks and that it runs over "ssh".
