If you are running Edgy, you could have just done
aptitude install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-plugin
Since you finished the installation of jre*bin, you have to make symlink
of all your binaries in <path to java>/bin to /usr/local/bin
(for instance, java and javaws)
To make java work in firefox, you need to make a symlink from
<path to java>/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins.
I would do one thing at a time. First get java working, then work on
flash.
