Java 5 Installation

I have tried following the steps and commands on the Ubuntu page you 
reference, but my ignorance is a barrier.  I have downloaded  
jre-1_5_0_10-linux-i586.bin, but I have not been able to fakeroot make, 
..... per the directions.  I would welcome some more suggestions for a 
newbie.
