True.  I must have done the same thing when I installed Kubuntu originally.

I could solve the real problem, or just keep the CD handy.  :)

I wonder if I could accomplish the same thing by installing a stock kernel, 
booting that, and then rebooting.

I didn't build anything in.  I gave up on that a long time ago, and change a 
distro stock config absolutely as little as possible.  I changed three items 
in this case, no more than four.
