I'm sure there are ways to use automatix without screwing up apt - perhaps
if the OP had read the article it wouldn't have been a problem. Just
because someone saw fit to write an article about installing automatix
doesn't mean it's the smart way to do something. In this case, automatix
certainly seems to have messed up his apt database, and the simplest fix
would be to remove automatix.
