Why doesn't lsof work?

On my P4-2.2GHz it takes a while to finish (this example is under LIGHT load)

time lsof
[buncha output]
real    0m12.909s
user    0m0.136s
sys     0m0.256s

So perhaps some patience is in order. I also use network mounts, and
remember that lsof also checks for pipes that are in use, so a zombied
process at the end of a pipe could be hanging things up a bit.
