My thoughts are similar.  I notice that screensavers all have the executable 
bit set.  I'd probably chmod -x them, rather than rename them.

But I have no more clue than you how any of this works. I haven't done much 
with screensavers in Linux.  Especially since I pretty much have to use a 
custom kernel, and I rarely bother building third party video drivers for my 
kernels, so my 3D is usually busted.
