New kernel headache - SOLVED

I will reply myself, this was one of those really silly things;
linux-restricted modules needed to be installed for new kernel, these
were not indicated as in need of update or anything by any software I
tried (Adept, Synaptic, aptitude). Once that was done wireless is back
and alive...
