Packages kept back : linux-image-386

Hello all, 
 I'm sure I'm being really daft, I tried an update && upgrade today and I get 
the same message I did on Saturday:

downloads:$ sudo aptitude upgrade

Building dependency tree... Done
Reading extended state information
Initializing package states... Done
Building tag database... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  linux-image-386

There were other packages it is now updating, but the kernel has been kept 
back. I have not been following the recent conversations about this, can 
anyone give me a short version?
