I guess my next move would be to hide ~/.kde and see how things fared with a 
new stock set of default config files.  If that fixes the problem, it's not 
likely any of the config files you care most about are the source of the 
trouble, so you could copy in your kmailrc and so forth.

If reverting to a stock ~/.kde doesn't fix it....  ??????  I think that's the 
end of the line.
