LCD Monitor recommendations

I mentioned that I'd had endless difficulties with LCDs and Linux, and it
just happened again. uname shows that I'm running 2.6.15-27-386 when I
should be at 2.6.17 (I think). I thought perhaps I just hadn't rebooted, as
Adept shows no upgrades. I rebooted, and the video died. The boot sequence
is visible. X starts, and the login screen is displayed. After logging in,
however, the screen goes black, the monitor complains that the frequencies
are out of range, and that's that.

I rebooted into Knoppix with no problem whatsoever, copied the monitor
section from Knoppix, and edited xorg.conf. Chaos. I left it for a bit, and
came back to see the login screen displayed. I logged in, changed the
resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024, and am running nicely, but I'm scared
to reboot.

The xorg.conf Monitor section I copied from Knoppix was:
Section "Monitor"
  identifier "SYS-172L"
  vendorname "Plug 'n' Play"
  modelname "Plug 'n' Play"

How come? How come Knoppix 3.9 came right up and Kubuntu wouldn't? How come
Kubuntu "fixed" itself? Come to that, how come Kubuntu rewrote my
xorg.conffile? The first thing I notice is that Knoppix specified
values for
HorizSync and VertRefresh in Section "Monitor", but Kubuntu doesn't. Is that
significant?
