Newbie and kppp

I found using something like wvdial from the command-line did two things:
1. It worked when kppp did not (stuff like you are saying)
2. When KDE bombs (which it does now and then) your dial-up won't go down -- 
if you connect from a script on a console via Ctrl+ALT+F1 or in a startup 
script before startx runs.
