I eventually gave up simply trying to copy-and-shrink the DVDs and am using
k9copy to convert the DVDs to avi format instead. The video and audio are
pretty poorly synchronised but for my purposes that doesn't matter (other
than being annoying).

Thank you for the suggestion, though.
