Can you give more details of your modem - type number, name, other 
identity?

If as you say it is in fact a 'modem', it probablt connects to the 
computer with USB connection. This type is not good for security and 
many linux users try to avoid them. they are also often difficult to 
set up because they are made for windows and need (windows) software 
to work.

If you have a broadband adsl modem/router with ethernet port/s then it 
will be much easier.
