HP Laptop

One of my nonprofits got an HP laptop. Nice box but it's got VISTA on
it, and may soon have a bullet hole in it.

VISTA is a lost cause, and I'm not going to try to support it, so I'd
like to make a dual boot of it. I'm getting nowhere. I can boot from the
Gutsy CD, but if I try to install, the screen goes black and never comes
back. I tried the alternate CD, with the same results. I tried to check
the CD for defects. Screen went black and never came back. Hitting ESC
makes it reboot.

Thinking the CD might be bad, I moved the ISO to the laptop and burned a
new CD from the laptop. Same behavior.

Thinking the ISO might be defective, I got a new one from the laptop and
reburned. Same behavior.

I have Gutsy on a stick. I booted into it. The Install began alright,
but the partitioner will only give me the option to reformat the entire
ntfs disk --- no option for dual boot.

1. Where have I gone wrong?
2. How should I proceed?
3. Will I ever regain the love of little Nell?
