Drive icons on desktop

My data point is that when I first boot up, I don't see any of the drive
icons.  But they show up within the first day.  So for me, it isn't any
mounting of CD/DVD.  Though mounting anything, like a USB drive, does seem
to be one of the ways to make it happen.
