External Hard drive issue

Hi all,
I think my problem is simple and someone in the list could solve it for me, but I'm a newbie indeed...
I bought an external Usb hard drive and I connected it for the first time running windows XP. It recognised it correctly and I saved in it files I wanted to share with my Linux box.
Once I boot with Linux and, after booting, turn on the external drive, Linux "sees" the drive but I cannot access into it because the OS says the disk is not mounted.
Can I solve the problem or I cannot use it with Linux? That's to say: can I share it between OSes (for example, music and photo folders)? The file system seems to be NTFS.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Regards,
