Suspend/resume erratic on feisty

Using Kubuntu Feisty on a Thinkpad T42p, suspend/resume behaves
erratically.  

== Scenario #1 ==
   1. 2 sessions are open for 2 different users
   2. Both users have it set to suspend when the laptop lid closes
   3. Close the lid
   4. suspend does not occur!  When I reopen the lid, the laptop is
      still in the pre-suspended state(on, at the desktop)

== Scenario #2 ==
   1. 2 sessions are open for 2 different users
   2. Both users have it set to suspend when the laptop lid closes
   3. Right-click on the power management icon in the tray-> suspend
   4. laptop goes into suspend mode
   5. close the lid
   6. open the lid
   7. laptop starts to resume then immediately suspends again! <- WTF??
   8. tap the power button and the laptop resumes for real this time

Ideas?  Is this stuff happening because I have 2 users logged in?
