Don't know about compiz, but maybe the installer got the wrong drivers
for your graphics card. Can you post the first 5 lines you get after
running "glxinfo"? This should identify problems with the direct rendering.
Also, can you post the outcome of this command: "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
| grep Driver". You get a list of drivers X uses. With high probability,
it's the bottom line that shows the graphics driver in use.

No direct glue to this one, I would play around with power management
boot options "acpi=forc" and "noapm".
