LTS stands for Long Term Support. The last one was Dapper Drake.
Because the distro is released every 6 months, businesses would be
reluctant to use it, they prefer stability. So Ubuntu decided to have
releases that would be supported for longer than the usual ones. These
are the LTS releases.
Upgrades between normal releases are only recommended if you go from one
to another without skipping any. It is possible to skip from one LTS to
the next, but from an LTS to a normal release, you have to go through
each release between.
If I've got anything wrong here, I'm sure someone will pipe up and
correct me. :@)
