Lexmark Z645 Printer

I know that there are some sharp minds here. Then there are some
that this is a waste of my time, but heck, I've got it and I want this
to work so bad. Not failure but low aim is crime. Alex Pope.

I searched the web and read all the horror stories about this
printer from Lexmark and what a paperweight it can make.
But is SO cheap at Wal*Mart, so I'm on a quest to get it to
work.

The one positive note I found was at

http://ubuntuformus.org/showthread.php?p=3791612

and I tried it on Kubuntu with almost success. So I was
thinking it was Kubuntu that was giving some problem.
So I took another system and loaded Ubuntu 7.10 and tried
the following. It is so close to working. Here is what I did.

sudo apt-get install printconf alien

mkdir lexmark
cd lexmark

wget http://www.downloaddelivery.com/srfilecache/CJLZ600LE-CUPS-1.0-1.TAR.gz

tar -xvzf CJLZ600LE-CUPS-1.0-1.TAR.gz

tar -n +143 z600cups-1.0-1.gz.sh > install.tar.gz

tar -xvzf install.tar.gz

sudo alien --scripts -t z600cups-1.0-1.i386.rpm
sudo alien --scripts -t z600llpddk-2.0-1.i386.rpm

sudo tar -xvzf z600llpddk-2.0.tgz -C /
sudo tar -xvzf z600cups-1.0.tgz -C /

sudo ldconfig

cd /usr/share/cups/model

sudo gunzip Lexmark-Z600-lxz600cj-cups.ppd.gz

sudo /etc/rc2.d/S19cupsys restart

Then going to the menu bar

System --> Administration --> Printing

and pointing to the ppd file in /usr/share//cups/model

it looks like the system recognizes the printer and a print
of the test file hangs. Terminal window shows the scheduler
running, system default, etc. but I get a message

 %%BoundingBox: comment in header!

I get the same information, or close to it under Kubuntu 7.10 also.

Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

I'm not quiting until I get this done.

Chuck
