I used to suffer from the mouse issues on my slaptop under Edgy;  quick
tip is to just restart X with ctrl-alt-backspace, or whatever you've
reassigned the mapping of ... that 'fixed' things for me.

As for the lower-res, well I prefer it, and have been trying to
replicate it, (to keep it), but xorg.conf don't want to play-ball :(
