To be completely honest, I'd personally avoid ATI like the plague if possible.
I suppose if you don't want 3D then it's less of a problem, but laptops with
ATI often times have other ATI stuff in them like disk controllers and audio
devices.
Depending on your cost and needs, I still think buying a system76
(http://system76.com) is better.
Kubuntu should run okay on that laptop, but the ATI hardware sometimes causes
trouble.
