As others have said, it shouldn't hurt anything to try, assuming you're 
prepared for a total catastrophe when you goof something up with your 
n00bishness.  (If you do, so what.  It's called learning.  Just don't try 
this on a "production" system.)

I would add that it's probably a really good idea to create a new user 
account, and play with KDE4 as that other user.  I haven't tried the new 
packages, but I would not be surprised if running KDE4 does things to your 
configuration files that will make KDE3 unhappy later, nor would I be 
surprised if KDE4 is too rough for actual use.  KDE3 went through several 
public releases (not beta releases) before it really started to get stable.  
We could be looking at six months to a year before it's really worth trying, 
unless you just like to break things for the merry hell of it.  (Which used 
to be me in my younger days, so more power to you if that is the case.)
