I didn't "jump his case".  I stressed (loudly) that what he wants to do
probably isn't smart.

I think it's a really good idea to stress that it's probably too early for
him to be trying it out.

Being new to linux shouldn't mean you don't know the difference between beta
and stable and anybody capable of installing software should understand the
concept of Beta.
