small progress, no help so far with cups

Greetings;

I've posted twice now, asking for cups help, with no response. However, I
now have made a small amount of progress. It seems the default kubuntu
install does not install a /etc/cups/client.conf file, which needs only to
specify ServerName. I've now generated that file, and an 'lpstat -d -p'
now returns:

==========
root at shop:~# lpstat -d -p
system default destination: lp2
printer lp0 is idle. enabled since Wed 31 Dec 1969 07:00:00 PM EST
printer lp1 is idle. enabled since Wed 31 Dec 1969 07:00:00 PM EST
printer lp2 is idle. enabled since Wed 31 Dec 1969 07:00:00 PM EST
        Sending print file, 302093 bytes...
printer lp3 is idle. enabled since Wed 31 Dec 1969 07:00:00 PM EST
==========

However, they are not visible or usable to cups and friends.

Having tried to add a printer, cups does seem to be accessing the named
server, but as it logs the scanning of its available ppd's, the log
suddenly stops before reaching the desired ppd file, like this:

The desired printer is a C-82, many entries on down the list from where
this log quits.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what to check next? I'm plumb
bumfuzzled.

If I ssh into my firewall box, and run mozilla there to localhost:631, all
4 of these printer profiles are there and usable with no other
intervention on my part other than setting up the /etc/cups/client.conf
file properly to name the server. I did NOT have to manually add them.

iptables is not running on the malfunctioning box.
