text mode install ?

well, if so, it is fb mode, which fails, not X :-(
I remember having had trouble with fb as well with my gentoo install, altough 
Xorg works ok.
what I would need is a _pure_ text boot mode (no framebuffer), like knoppix 
offers upon pressing F2 at boot time.
I'll try the server CD next, maybe it offers that.
