text mode install ?

hi all,
I'm currently running into problems trying to install kubuntu dapper on one of 
my pc's.
this one has an sis graphics onboard which is obviously not recognised by the 
installer, so the cd boots, but then screen gets dark, monitor goes offline 
and nothing more.
I wonder if there is any text-mode installer which could be used (if so: 
how ?), setting up xorg manually, afterwards ?
(problem is with both live-cd as well as alternate).
