Nother thing to try is to move ~/.kde to something like ~/oldkde (I drop the 
dot, so I don't forget about it). Then without ~/.kde available, log out, and 
log back in, and KDE should regenerate the .kde directory with defaults. Did 
the problem recur? If not then it is part of the .kde structure, and you can 
rebuild it from ~/oldkde, and try to figure out what is going wrong and where 
it is.

That's the old school way of fixing up KDE problems, and a good one to keep in 
mind when KDE gets weird.
