I agree that VLC is great, but it won't:
1) won't play these realmedia files
2) let me adjust the playback speed.

No, I just found the real king: mplayer in graphical form, Gmplayer.
Same keyboard shortcuts as Mplayer, which means that I have total
control over playback (and subtitles). Wish I knew about Gmplayer
earlier.
