yeah, but I didn't need those on Dapper, either.  So it doesn't follow from
your statement that it's kubuntu's problem (though I happen to believe t
is - ubuntu goes overboard in expecting everything in at least one of the
*-desktop packages to be installed by everybody).

Indeed - edgy's much more advanced than the Debian version John would have
been using.  As always, not everybody agrees with every decision made along
the way.
