AFAIK the later is the only way.

personaly i prefer:
rxvt-unicode -geometry 122x48 +sb -fn "xft:Bitstream Vera Sans
Mono:pixelsize=13" -title root -n root -e sudo mc

for that. The advantage here is that only the mc instance runs with
root-privileges, not the whole window. And after a while you will notice
you move much faster across the filesystem (ALT+c) with mc.
