The November 2005 Issue of Tux Magazine, which is available for free in
their archives explains very clearly how you can install different
distributions on the same machine and not have grub overwritten.
It's just a matter of creating a separate boot partition for grub, then
let the installs do whatever they want but don't let them touch your
boot partition. When the installs are done, just copy the entry in the
menu.lst that the install created to the menu.lst on your boot partition
and you can have as many distros as you have space for.
If the distro only installs lilo, then your work is a bit more cut out
as you have to create the grub entry yourself.
