I have been having the same problem myself on my desktop, so it is not 
related to your laptop.  On my computer it does as you said about 50% of 
the time, about 10% of the time I get a shutdown but with text, and 
about 40% of the time I get the nice splash shutdown like I am suppose to.

I tried that once a while back and it did a shutdown, non splash.
