Finally got to the bottom of this one. So, after installing the
proprietary nivdia drivers from apt-get, adding a new mode in my
xorg.conf file for the desired resolution I then had to open the
display settings from the "system setttings", go to the "hardware"
section and specifically pick my monitor which thankfully was listed.
Now the display is crystal clear and I'm a happy man!
