[Testing Email]

Dear All,

I am new to Ubuntu Linux

I am trying to compile QT on my Ubuntu I am wondering I am having a problem 
saying

 The environment variable $QTDIR is not set correctly. It is currently
   set to "", but it should be set to this directory,
   which is "/usr/local/qt-2.3.2".

   Please read the INSTALL file for instructions on how to set $QTDIR
   correctly. If you have set $QTDIR in your .profile or .login, you
   will need to log out and log in again to make the setting effective

But i have set already the environmental variable, I am wondering maybe I have 
an error. 

May i ask where is the proper location where to save the .login  or .profile , 
also how can I see if the environmental variable is set to " " ,  I run env 
but I cant see " "
