kubuntu ibook not booting now

i took my ibook to a coffee shop, used it, shut it down, and brought it
home. now when i try to boot it it seems like it goes along fine but
eventutlly stops at the Kubuntu logo with a blue bar below it. i get the X
curser and just before the logo/blue bar shows up.

what is going on? how can i get this to complete the boot process? i
really need to get in there because i just wrote another chapter on my
book before i shut the laptop down.

any help would sure be appreciated. thank you.
