Prevent unused modules form loading at boot

Hi. I'm new to debian/kubuntu. I want to prevent a few modules from being
loaded at boot time. I've tried the option "skip= module_a module_b module_c"
in /etc/discover-modprobe.conf but it doesn't work: the modules are still
being loaded. I also tried to edit /etc/hotplug.d/blacklist. Same result.
Any idea, beside deleting files in /lib/modules?
